  • The 2025 LF Historical Society writing series to our organization’s founding members.

    We owe so much to these forward looking historical preservationists who saved the 1833 Old Bank Building from the urban renewal wrecking ball in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Also, 2025 is the 60th anniversary of of the 1965 election of Dr. Fred Sabin as the first LF Historical Society president.

    Exhibits include a new virtual exhibit, Making History Today, along with ongoing Native American Artifacts, Little Falls Diamonds, from the First Cheese Market in the United States Exhibits. Our Current Exhibits include the Urban Renewal Exhibit and our Vietnam War Exhibit.

Originally an 1833 bank, the building where The Little Falls Historical Society Museum is located in Herkimer County, New York, was converted and restored to house thousands of artifacts, family records, and relics of the past. The museum is an educational, eye-opening experience, suitable for all ages.

He Still Sustains: Pitt the Painter’s Studio Loft

From 2011 to 2013, I wrote my master’s degree thesis for the Cooperstown Graduate Program about “Pitt the Painter” and his role in showcasing the identity of Little Falls by means of his artwork. The project was largely based on oral histories told by those in town who remembered him since his death on September 4, 2007. While I spoke with several people, there were so many more I did not reach, as Pitt’s sphere of influence seemed immeasurable. The project went on, and it was apparent that these stories meshed together as modern-day folklore about talent, humor, addiction, and belonging.

New Swimming Pool a Busy Place on First Day of Use on August 9, 1961

Little Falls Evening Times – Opening of the new swimming pool near the Monroe Street field was a big splash. About 400 swimmers, mostly children, were on hand for the first dip.
